“I make jewelry because it
brings me joy and fulfillment.
Sitting in my studio surrounded by precious metals and brilliant
gemstones, I am a happy man.”
Donald Maclachlan always knew
he wanted to be an artist, but his journey was an indirect one. After receiving degrees from Bates
College and Tufts University he practiced dentistry for fifteen years. He then decided it was time to pursue
his true passion as an artist. It
was at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston where Donald fell in love with
jewelry making. He quickly gained
recognition for his unique and detailed designs. He received a Spectrum Award from the American Gem Trade
Association in 2007. Donald
currently lives and works on the North Shore of Massachusetts.
The natural world is the main
source of inspiration in Donald’s work.
Whether it be the night’s star studded sky or the flowers in his garden,
keeping an eye on nature provides endless stimulation for new designs. His jewelry is made with a combination
of sterling silver, 14k, 18k and 22k gold. Every hinge and clasp is individually designed and hand
forged. Donald’s work also
features a variety of brilliant colored sapphires, garnets and diamonds. He continues to create new designs and
push the limits of his skill and imagination.
